Re: Ubuntu CDs

Hi Ali,

Thank you for your nice reply.

I agree with you that linux is free (in both meanings) and should be always free. But in my opinion, being free of charge is not the most powerful feature of linux.

When you talk to computer enthusiasts and programmers you can tell them how it is easy to download iso file and burn it to CD because they will really appreciate other linux benefits to them.

Unfortunately, Even if you tell the public the distinction advantages of linux and try to convince everyone to use linux, most of them will judge the product by looking at the packaging and the price. If it's free they will think it is only a game and might throw it and forget what it is meant for espescially if it seems like a blank recordable cd available everywhere for sale.

Additionally, Ubuntu no more offer free shipping and I have expenses such as CDs cost and advertising material.

Hello Yaser and Welcome :)

My name is Ali, I'm a Lubuntu [0] Team Member [1] and also a member of this LoCo Team. We are glad to have you here :)

I just saw the link you provided, it is really nice and will help the students.
So, are you going to 'sell' these CDs and/or USB Drives?
As you may know, you can download Ubuntu ISO [2], burn that to a CD [3] or create a LiveUSB [4] - you can also use UNetbootin [5].

As you also may know, Linux is free (free to choose whatever you want and free as in free of charge).
If I may, I think 'selling' Linux CDs or USBs is not what Linux for. If I were you, I would give that for free to people. I know you guys need to sell at that fair but how about giving that for free? it could be a bad idea from me but IMHO, selling is not good idea as well.

I'm definitely not trying to demotivate you, I'm just sharing my honest opinion :)

If you need anything, please let us know and we are more than glad to help as much as we can.

If you have an old machine, let me know. We can breath new life into it using Lubuntu ;)

Thanks :)

I'm glad to find a local group for Ubuntu in the UAE. I have been using Linux for 5 years now. As a student, I want to participate in a competition organized by Dubai SME (http://www.yec.ae ). It's a fair where each participant can promote and sell his product. My idea is to present Ubuntu and maybe other Linux distributions under IT category. Now, I'm looking for branded CDs and flash disks that are preloaded with live linux distributions. I'll be grateful if you can help me getting what I need or give me an advice regarding that.

Thanks,

Yaser Ammar
