I could use an opinion on how to proceed here, as Lennart still hasn't
responded. Live with the bug because it is too risky to try to fix?

(By the way, if you haven't seen me much the latest week or two, I've been
busy myself, due to heavy day job workload. I hope to be able to get back
on track soon.)
