I don't have a fix for you sorry...

Just wanted to add that, once I had finished with installing Ubuntu-eee
8.04.1 on my 701. The volume was set to maximum after the installation
was completed. So, i ran the following script into a terminal window:

(http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/index.php5?title=Fix:_volume_control)

and now it's low also. It was 'screamingly loud before though :)
