Live CD worked fine but synaptic did not work properly after install.  For example, was able to install pysol from live cd but didn't work after install.  Found help from: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu-eee/+question/43121.  "What i did to get around this was to go system>administration>software sources and change download from United States to main server."
Hope this helps others with this problem.
