CAUSE:
/sbin/unix_chkpwd has wrong group/permissions

SOLUTION:
sudo chown root:shadow /sbin/unix_chkpwd
sudo chmod 2755 /sbin/unix_chkpwd

when trying to change the password with the application located at the user setting tab - about me it fails when you need to verify your old password. quadruple checked it. possibly related to the "fail to recognize password after the computer is locked" bug?
