surfed proposed the following answer:
make sure the boot flag is set. run fisk -l and make sure that there is
a star under Boot next to Device. If not you will have to set it either
with fdisk or gparted.
in fdisk:
sudo fdisk /dev/yourdevice
type "a" and press enter
type "1" and press enter
type "w" --"--
type "q" --"--
a toggles boot flag
1 is your first partition
w writes the partition table
q quit
