[Bug 276708] Re: wifi problems

The wifi connection and performance issues seem to be caused by new(er)
madwifi drivers. At least for me (eee 701 + eee Ubuntu 8.04.1)
downgrading the madwifi drivers fixed all wifi issues.

It seems that the madwifi drivers that come with array.org's kernel (and
thus with Ubuntu.eee) are not entirely compatible with the Atheros
AR242x. The older version works fine if compiled for current kernels.
The answer was found from the help.ubuntu.com wiki (
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC/Fixes )

Tsuki wrote following to the wiki:

"This version of madwifi (madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r3698-20080604) only
gives intermittent WiFi for me - I get frequent brown-outs (no data
though connection stays up) and connection failures. The old madwifi
(madwifi-ng-r3366+ar5007) linked from here:
http://wiki.eeeuser.com/getting_ubuntu_8.04_to_work_perfectly works
better for me but doesn't appear to be hosted on snapshots.madwifi.org
anymore! I don't have the ability to host the file myself, is anyone
already doing it? --Tsuki"

So, to fix your slow/falky wifi on your eee 701, download http://file-
hosting.site-hosts.net/eeepc/madwifi-nr-r3366+ar5007.tar.gz , compile,
install and reboot. POOF, wifi works lightning fast!

Bug description:
I tried 8.04.1. Found a number of problems which forced me back to 8.04.

1) Flaky wireless connection. Sometimes it would connect, sometimes not. Always connected before.
2) Shutdown unreliable from remix. Had to go to a terminal and do a sudo shutdown.
3) Documents didn't display from the file manager. I click on a text doc, hit Display, and nothing happens.
4) Connection via Nokia phone possible but seemed slower than with 8.04.

I do like Remix, the faster boot, and more disk space, but without wireless it was a no-go for the moment
