[Question #53170]: No wireless after install 1000h

New question #53170 on Ubuntu Eee:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu-eee/+question/53170

Hi all,
First off, I'm not sure what the etiquette is here, but I'm also posting this question over on the ubuntu-eee forum, if this amounts to spam, sorry about that, I didn't know.

I'm an advanced Windows user trying to move to linux for the first time. I installed Ubuntu-eee on my 1000h off a USB stick without incident.

Upon first boot, the "nm-applet" thingy on the top right does not show any available wireless networks. I tried rebooting a few times, and made sure that the wireless was on in the BIOS, which it was, so no luck. Then, I tried tapping the fn-f2 key, but this will either immediately or in a few taps crash the whole system, requiring a hard reboot.

If I click on the "nm-applet" icon and go to "manual configuration" and switch the wireless from "roaming" to "manual", in the following screen it will show me all the available networks and their corresponding strengths, so to some degree the wireless card is certainly working. However, selecting the correct network and providing the right key in the "manual configuration" screen does not result in a working connection, and the "edit wireless networks" screen still shows no networks.

I don't know if it means anything, but hitting "iwlist ra0 scan" in a terminal does show me all the wireless networks that I know are here.

I'm out of ideas, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
