http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/uswsusp) or with TuxOnIce (formerly known as
Suspend2, you need to patch and recompile your kernel for this).
Both hibernating solutions allow you to use a swapfile, to reduce the
size of your image to a desired size and to do additionally compression
and/or enryption to it.
If you don't like to have swapping enabled, you can add your swapfile to
the fstab with the 'noauto' option and do a swapon/swapoff on
suspend/resume (can be scripted in /etc/acpi/{suspend.d,resume.d} )
