Thank you for your clarifying images, Lance. They helped a lot!

Now running with Gnome classic:

Devhelp (apt-get install devhelp): entrybox is still outside the visible screen

Activity menus can be better. It is still too easy to navigate the wrong way when reaching the favorites. I would like to have it like this (suggestion):

You can't right click an item in them menu, and add it to favorites. You need to go to the activity window.

In 13.10 as I run as my production computer there is an option to select which version of gnome you want. In 14.04 there are no such option after installed gnome-panel and restart of the computer.
