I think recent 'cups' updates are breaking boot :^(
I'm trying to figure this out.

what has been updates? -> dpkg Log Tried Recovery mode and checked syslog?
Remove "quiet splash" when in GRUB from the kernel parameters to see what is going on at booting up ...
