In case it helps, that's not just a Unity issue, it is likely to affect
menu systems other than Unity (GNOME, KDE, XFCE, LXDE, ...). The use of
.desktop files started well before Unity existed. It's just that the
bug reporter was running Unity when they noticed the issue, so that is
how the reported it as affecting them.

For example, I just added xastir to my 10.04.3 LTS desktop (like you, I
have not yet upgraded my primary OS to 12.04, although I do have some
12.04 VMs and even a 12.10 VM already), and it does not appear in the
GNOME Applications menu under Ham Radio, where I would expect it to.

Creating a xastir.desktop file and adding it to the debian/ packaging
directory of xastir should be straightforward. I'd attempt it, except I
have never used xastir and so am not well placed to decide (for example)
which categories of software it should belong to, etc.

Given that 12.04 is released and 12.10 is a way off yet, and that you
aren't likely to get this considered a security update, I don't think
this is ultra urgent to fix -- it can wait until your finals are over
and you are suitably decompressed :)
