I had the same problem trying to log into Swedish Tax Auth.
And my bank etc.
The problem arose after upgrading to Ubuntu 8.04 (32-bit).
I use Firefox 3 beta 5.
Solution for me was:
I searched Synaptic for "JRE" and realized I had many versions.
I uninstalled all but sun-java6-bin, sun-java6-jre and sun-java6-plugin.
