If a particular screenshot needs highlighting, Shutter works great, and is made to do exactly what is being discussed.

Subject: Re: [Ubuntu-manual] Screenshot highlighting
I would say definitely in cases where there are a lot of different
buttons/locations to look at on the screen. Or in cases where the right
button/location isn't obvious. Something like in Thunderbird, if you
want to point out the Send/Receive button, or a folder. Or in a
situation where you could re-use screenshots of the same
picture--pointing out different aspects of it. Something like the
Nautilus folder, where you'll want to point out the location of the
favorite places, folder structure, main window pane, and the menu
(global menu).
As for building it into Quickshot, if it won't take a lot of coding (or
try to turn Quickshot into a GIMP replacement), I agree that the
functionality should be put in. But, if it's going to make Quickshot a
bloated application that does things that other applications can do
better, I would say that we should use applications that are designed
for those tasks.
I'm also looking at the fact that right now, no one's developing
Quickshot, yet we're talking about adding things to it. We really need
to get people working on the application itself, before creating more
work that no one's doing. At least that's my understanding from what
I've read in the previous messages.
Have a great day:)
Patrick.
