or can I install from the repos. I'm using 12.04

I'd suggest installing TeX Live from upstream still. I had hopes that
the newer Ubuntu texlive packages would work for our manual, but we
still hit some minor snags. So it's easiest to just install from
upstream. Then you know you have the latest versions of the TeX Live
packages.

I thought this was the case, but it always pays to check.

I would suggest this line needs change to a current version as it makes
the page look rather dated:-
"Note: These instructions assume that you are using Ubuntu 9.04 or
later."

Good call. I'd hope by this point that contributors to our project are
using a more modern version of Ubuntu! I've removed that note.

Between these two lines I would add, $ mkdir ~/Projects

1. Create a new directory in your home folder called Projects.
2. Change into that directory in a terminal window:

I've done that now, too.

New pair of eyes :)

With aid of may assistant TeX Live has been installed as per http://ubuntu-manual.org/getinvolved/authors#install-texlive and everything appears to be working. The following was a bit worrying though:-

"(Note that this hasn’t been tested yet and it’s pure guesswork on Kevin’s part! Let us know if it does or doesn’t work for you.)"

Especially given the time it takes to install. If nobody has had any problems, can that be removed or reworded. Also, I think there should be a warning about the length of time it takes. One 45 mins in our case. I know the installer gives a remarkably accurate indication of the time required, but anybody who is just used to installing the more usual packages may be taken by surprise. I know we were. Thankfully we had set a side enough time.
