I don't know how to reply to the thread. I'm not up on mailing lists.
Please help with forwarding along to the list.

I would personally prefer to steer clear of Google map. There is never an
offline option and I have increasingly lost trust with them handling so
much of my data. Not to mention their complete proprietary nature.

Perhaps Mapquest would be a good corporate option. Or better yet,
OpenStreetMaps. There are still a few bugs in the OSM navigation app for
Android. But porting to Ubuntu with the original devs and Canonicals help
would make simple to fix most of them at the same time. The OSM project is
very community based, a perfect fit for Canonical. There could even be a
feature where the app would follow and track new roads that are built.
