Re: Ubuntu Edge (the Ubuntu handset)

I hope you're not working in ubuntu marketing department. :)
From the marketing view, every product starts from STP: segment, target, positioning. Every product should have a very specific segment. Factors like design/pricing etc. would reflect such a target.
If you argue ubuntu edge is for anyone, I wouldn't say anything but wish it all the best.

Hey!

I think ubuntu's marketing people are targeting the wrong segment. Yes, ubuntu edge seems to be innovative, but it's not enough for the high end market. With poor branding in mobile and pc desktop market, normal high end people would not notice the highlight of ubuntu edge, except for us, the ubuntu touch fans.

I think you are wrong on that front, I know normal people, who buy high end devices, who don't have anything to do with Ubuntu and yet they are pretty much interested in Ubuntu Edge, even they tell me of things about Ubuntu Edge from different tech websites they visit. Ubuntu Edge from what I could read is not something that's going to be on sale in the market to target a certain class of people :)

But convergence pc should be very attractive to those without pc/laptop but looking forward to enjoy the fun of pc. So ubuntu's marketing segment should shift to the young people without pc. China is a good place to start, just like Jolla/Sailfish.

I agree that the merch will cost money and maybe I am being a bit optimistic on how many would get sold for what price. But I personally think the cost of the merch is minimal when you have reached the final $32mill goal and it's something that Canonical can fund. Maybe I am being idealistic but I feel that *some* of the options should have been considered and the marketing approached from a different angle and more agressively. Canonical could have done more and what they have done so far was too little too late.

Either way I wish the project my best, I want it to happen and have done everything I can do make it happen.

Lets see how it goes.

I don't think thats Canonical's intentions. They would build the phone ONLY if people want that phone.

They can't just lower the specs, because then they won't be delivering the product that people paid for.

THANK YOU. If canonical were to announce a drop in specs, I'd pretty much immediately take my $600 back and then spend just $300 on the Nexus 4, since that already exists, and already has mid-level specs. I pledged my $600 specifically because I *want* a desktop in my pocket.
