Hmm... There seems to be something wrong here. Hitting the Home/Ubuntu button 
should *always* bring you to the home scope, doing the long swipe from the 
left edge should *always* bring you to the applications scope. If that doesn't 
happen for you, please report a bug with steps to reproduce the issue.
