Re: Troubleshooting New Port

Hi John,

Sorry to hear about your frustration about lack of support about your port.
I can assure you that folks (be it Canonical employees or volunteer
developers) do care about _any_ contribution to Ubuntu. I'm personally very
thankful that you joined us when we first launched the porting effort. It
was a tough time for early adopters and a platform in development, and to
have stuck with Ubuntu from the times it was a moving target is even more
appreciated.

The Ubuntu community is bigger than just Canonical and it couldn't just
scale if it weren't for contributors taking the lead and helping each
other. If someone hasn't replied about questions or bugs on the port it's
not because they are being ignored, but as Chris mentioned on his reply,
porting is not a trivial process and one where the list of people with the
right domain knowledge is limited. Adding to that, the platform has been
evolving and the initial guide had to be deprecated at some point. There
had been some efforts to rewrite the porting guide afterwards, but everyone
got busy to focus on the launch.

Many people have put a great deal of effort, passion and long hours in
making the phone happen over the last two years. It's been an incredible
effort, I'm very proud of what we've pulled together (including app
developers, porters, users, advocates...) and now that we've got a stable
platform and a phone in the market, I'm looking forward to see a new wave
of ports.

And to confirm what Jelmer is mentioning, yes, the new porting guide is now
in review mode after the initial draft, and we should be publishing it in
the next few days :)

Cheers,
David.
