can't get cell network connection

Hi,

I have recently acquired a BQ E5 and a SIM card from a local provider. I find the card appears to be detected by the phone, but it does not seem able to find any cell networks.

In case it matters, I am located in northern Canada, but I have confirmed with my provider that on the 2G band they support 2 of the 4 frequencies that the phone supports (850/1900). Further, there is another provider that supports all the frequencies in my area. From this I expect that when I go into cellular settings=>carrier I should get a list of networks, but it says none, and if I tap it, it spins for a few seconds, then leaves me with a screen with the check mark beside "automatically" and that is it. I have toggled every setting in the cellular network settings, many times, I can say for sure that there is no combination of settings that shows the cell networks.

I have also tried my SIM card in other phones (android based), where it works, and I have tried working SIM cards from other phones in my Ubuntu phone, which show the same symptoms.

I wandered through the bug reports and from there found the ofono scripts where I can do list-modems, in there it lists ril_0 and ril_1, it shows both of them as powered and online. But I am not sure where/how to take this to the next level for figuring out the problem. If there exists a troubleshooting flowchart for my problem, I have not been able to find it, and I am not clear if this is a bug I should report, or a situation where the phone just won't work where I am...

Would someone be so kind as to point me in the correct direction and give me a push? I want so badly to be using my new phone...
