I've never had trouble with MTP, but if someone's determined to use SSH (a tried and true method!) and hunting for an SFTP client, it's time for a reminder that Ubuntu ships one with Nautilus. :)
I'm not sure there *is* an alternative. In the meantime, SFTP is definitely one of the pros of convergence.
