Successive commands usually process the same argument. 'Alt-.' inserts
the last argument of the previous command. GNU readline rocks, read the
manual.

It is common to execute successive commands on the same argument, like 'mkdir mydir' then 'cd mydir'. The shortcut 'Alt-.' is very handy, it inserts the last argument of the last command at the cursor position.
