I understand, I am not a design expert so take my proposals as such ;)
I was just checking the actions on the chat groups of the Telegram app and saw that a swipe right gesture slid a small menu with icons for 2 different actions: delete and step out of chat.
This could be a more intuitive approach, something like icons for mark as read and bookmark (or read later).

But it would imply a 2 gesture solution.... well I will leave the issue
to you guys to think about ;)
