[Bug 1061489] Re: Add a button "Translate this description" to crowdsource Package translations
- Quality is paramount, and the DDTP is translated with restricted permissions to ensure that.
- I don't mind having a backlog of suggestions.
- The quality of those suggestions often varies, but my guess is that a mecanism like that would mainly draw people who were interested by the package in the first place, and will thus have a knowledge of it, and vested interest in having a proper suggestion.
On the technical side:
- Implementation in the web interface (relatively straightforward using Nightmonkey code)
- Implementation in the Desktop Client (might be more complicated, not sure how the software center is coded)
- The Launchpad timeout (https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/869824) is a big issue. It seems that the Canonical cloud team is focused on other areas right now.

Bug description:
There are a lot of untranslated software descriptions in WebCatalog, Software Center and Synaptic (60000+ strings in most languages, https://translations.launchpad.net/ddtp-ubuntu/ ).
Relying solely on translators doesn't scale. Would it be possible to add a mechanism to enable translation suggestion crowdsourcing ?
The basic idea would be a button to "Translate this software
description" below each untranslated description that would enable
users to easily provide a translation suggestion to the DDTP, either
inline, or using Launchpad.
