Re: Fwd: 14.04 DVDs/CDs: Pre-orders now open for verified LoCo Teams!

Greetings from Ashtabula. I am still around and I should offer a few
points. From the LoCo Council perspective, there is plenty to clear up
as evidenced by e-mails from my counterpart Points of Contact from
across this planet. I really wanted to address this at a somewhat more
comprehensive IRC meeting but circumstances have gotten ahead of me.

Verified LoCo communities are eligible to receive distributions of
installation media for LTS releases. Unlike in the past this means
that discs come out only every 2 years instead of every 6 months. As I
write this, the number of Verified LoCo communities on this planet is
only 47. The only teams in North America presently eligible to receive
discs are:

Arizona
California
Colorado
Canada
Oregon
Quebec
Delaware
Ohio
Michigan
Pennsylvania

While the three Deputies (Unit193, James Gifford, and Svetlana Belkin)
have been minding things in general there were some things that could
not be delegated to them. One of those things is requesting discs. I
have to go ahead and make the request.

Now, we only get a single distribution of discs per LTS. We would only
get 150 Ubuntu desktop DVDs and 25 Ubuntu server CDs **once** for 14.04.
The next time discs will come around to be offered will not likely be
until April 2016. There will be no discs sent for any of the flavors
(Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Kylin, Edubuntu, Mythbuntu, Ubuntu GNOME).

With all of that being put forward, I do not want to request media that
is not going to be put to use. Holding it all until OLF 2014 means
waiting until **late October** this year when there will already have
been released 14.10. A plan needs to be developed to distribute media
across the state in such manner the community deems appropriate. We
have very wide, open parameters for how we can do that (local
programs, booths at fairs, giveaways at churches, etc.). We must have a
plan, though.

The Deputies are charged with the mission of working out a plan in
concert with the rest of the community. Once the Deputies discuss a
plan that seems viable, I will go ahead and make the disc request. I
will have to determine a central point to land the discs so I am not
trans-shipping them from Ashtabula.

Hopefully this move things forward.
