Hey Everybodeee! After a few weeks of winter doldrums, there are
suddenly an embarrassment of riches on the Ubuntu-ca LoCo Portal:
http://loco.ubuntu.com/teams/ubuntu-ca/events/
There are a couple of Ubuntu Hours at the Kitchener and Guelph
chapters this week and next:
*Event:* Ubuntu Hour Kitchener
*Date:* Thursday, 13 February 2014
*Time:* 7:00pm to 9:00pm (yes, I know that's not an hour)
*Location:* Egg Roll King Restaurant, 85 Courtland Avenue East,
Kitchener, Ontario
*Map:* http://osm.org/go/ZXnwS2DKA-?m=&way=195517589
*Organizer:* Bob Jonkman http://wiki.ubuntu.com/BobJonkman
*Register:* http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-ca/2707/detail
*Event:* Ubuntu Hour Guelph
*Date:* Thursday, 20 February 2014
*Time:* 7:00pm to 8:00pm (@azend knows how long an hour is)
*Location:* Pennywhistle Pub, 2 Quebec Street, Guelph, Ontario
*Map:* http://osm.org/go/ZXn8~Jfez?m=&node=2436574662
*Organizer:* Verdi R-D https://launchpad.net/~azend
*Register:* http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-ca/2704/detail
Then there's an international Open Data Day Hackathon on Saturday, 22
February. Thanx to Jose Antonio Rey on the LoCo Council, Ubuntu is
cross-promoting this event as an Ubuntu LoCo Global Event. Check
http://wiki.opendataday.org/2014/City_Events#Canada to see if there's
an event near you, then add it to
http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/global/2703/
So far, we've only got Waterloo Region on the list:
*Event:* Open Data Day Hackathon
*Date:* Saturday, 22 February 2014
*Time:* 10:00am to 4:30pm
*Location:* Kwartzlab Makerspace, 33 Kent Avenue, Kitchener, Ontario
*Map:* http://osm.org/go/ZXnwY4HA?m=&way=199095014
*Register:* http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-ca/2705/detail
*Organizer:* OpenData Waterloo Region http://opendatawr.ca
*More Info:* http://wiki.opendataday.org/Waterloo_Region
Then there's the meeting of the entire Canadian Team on IRC and in
Video Chat. This time we're going to try Google Hangouts-On-Air, which
will record and stream the video on YouTube so everyone can view
simultaneously (although only 10 people can broadcast at a time).
*Event:* IRC/Video Chat meeting for Ubuntu-ca
*Date:* Thursday, 27 February 2014
*Time:* 8:30pm NST, 8pm AST, 7pm EST, 6pm CST, 5pm MST, 4pm PST
*IRC Channel:* #ubuntu-ca on Freenode,
http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=ubuntu-ca
*Video Channel:* To Be Announced
*Organizer:* Jeff Smith https://plus.google.com/101763540123089959893
*Register:* http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-ca/2706/detail
And the grand finale: the first Ubuntu 14.04LTS Release Party has been
confirmed! Let there be Cupcakes and Coffee!
*Event:* Trusty Tahr Toronto Release Party
*Date:* Thursday, 17 April 2014
*Time:* 8:00pm to 1:00am
*Location:* Alio Lounge, 108 Dundas Street West, Toronto, Ontario
*Map:* http://osm.org/go/ZX6BtMHNE-?m=&node=1113718580
*Organizer:* Michael Kaulbach https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kaulbach
*Register:* http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-ca/2701/detail
But that's not all! There are rumours of another Ubuntu Hour Toronto,
to take place sometime before the end of the month!
And I'm pretty sure the Waterloo Region Ubuntu 14.04LTS Release Party
will be happening at Kwartzlab, shortly after the release date.
And I'll bet that Guelph won't be far behind with their Release Party!
And there's London, and Vancouver, and Ottawa, and all those other
places where people keep popping up -- let me know if you organize
something, and I'll spam the mailing list again.
For those of you who have never organized an Ubuntu Hour or Release
party, let me include Bob's Handy Guide To Running An Ubuntu Hour Or
Release Party:
1. Announce you're doing it.
2. Do it.
Have fun, and see you online, at an Ubuntu Hour, or an Ubuntu Release
Party!
- --Bob.
