I now seem to have a workable Ubuntu system.

I have the fixmtrr.sh script running at startup and the following section in
my xorg.conf

This is using the xorg-edgers/ppa and 2.6.30-rc2. Things are working much
better. The CPU usage still tends to get high (100%) but that is probably
another issue and nothing shows in 'top' at all to indicate where the cycles
are going. Quite a usable system now.

I think that vidram calculation and setting may have been the final item
needed.

I never managed the backtrace as 'apport' crashed every time.
