I was using ubuntu 8.10 on an pretty old notebook without having any
problems.

The last few days I spent lot of time trying to use 9.04 but the system
always hangs during boot.


I tried a fresh install of
- ubuntu i386 desktop (installed via. alternative cd because booting from desktop cd is also impossible)
- ubuntu i386 server (without anything extra installed)
- xubuntu i386

But the system always hangs (sometimes it's a kernel panic) during boot
and I even don't know the reason.
