[Bug 376741] [NEW] Desktop won't render (garbled) - after installing ATI Radeon Catalyst Control Center

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Dell Latitude D600 512MB
ATI Radeon 9000 32MB
Ubuntu 9.04 - GNOME

[Have not yet found error message/log indicating which package to report]

PROBLEM: Boots past Ubuntu splash screen (100% bar), flashes through 4
corrupt graphic screens, ending on one that displays something like the
Ubuntu splash screen (100% bar) in the upper half left and right
corners, something like the Ubuntu small icon logo repeated ~32 times
across the top like a bar, and the lower half of the screen multi
colored vertical line noise. [I believe the desktop is active, but
don't know how to navigate/confirm that]

WHEN IT BEGAN: Used the main menu add/remove to add some KDE
educational packages and the ATI Radeon Catalyst Control Center;
Catalyst mentioned something didn't initialize; rebooted and problem
began.

SO FAR: Tried recovery mode fsck, xfix, dpkg. [I'm very
willing/comfortable using the root console and moderately familiar with
Linux. I need pointers on what logs to find or configs to edit. Is
there a VGA mode for the desktop so I can uninstall the Catalyst
package? If I have to reformat, what is the best option to backup
home/prefs?]

BACKGROUND: Recently reformatted system from Ubuntu Intrepid to Ubuntu
Jaunty (using Canonical shipped CD) where graphics became a bit slower,
but running without glitches. [I've read the problems about ATI not
keeping pace with X.] Both Ubuntu versions had a habit of the touch-pad
buttons locking up for periods of time. Jaunty started beeping a few
times during shutdowns.

Your good works are very much appreciated,

ANDY
