Message #03549
[Bug 345119] Re: [i965 X3100] X freezes randomly, only mouse pointer still functional
I had a lot of random X crashes (with mouse pointer still movable) like
described on this page since installing Jaunty. The system logs never
record any messages at the time of the crash (they have messages from
before the crash, and messages from after when I restart, but never
anything from around the time of the crash). I upgraded to the 2.7.1
drivers and it didn't fix the problem, and may have made it crash more
often, maybe every hour on average. Most of the crashes happen while I
was scrolling in Firefox (it may be because I am in Firefox most of the
time though). After a crash, the only thing I could do was to restart
the computer using REISUB. (I don't have SSH server on this computer so
I can't try to SSH in or anything.) Visual effects are always set to
"Off".
My computer is a Gateway MX6927 with a Intel Corporation Mobile
945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27a2]
(rev 03).
Then I changed the AccelMethod to UXA. It has not crashed since (which
is strange since UXA is supposed to be less stable). Now my screen does
get messed up pretty often (this didn't happen before). It flickers and
sometimes "shakes" horizontally every few minutes. And every once in a
while (sometimes every hour, sometimes every few minutes), the screen
would look like it got horizontally moved to the left side of my screen,
with the left fifth of the screen having been moved off the left side
and wrapped around on the right. The mouse pointer is not affected
though, and I can still use it if I can figure out the right place to
click (e.g. when I hover over where a button is supposed to be, the
button would be highlighted, even though it is not displayed in the
right place). And after I change the window, or if I just continue using
my computer normally for another minute or so, the screen would fix
itself.
I figure that this is a huge improvement. Hey, the screen gets messed up
every once in a while, but it's kinda cool; and most importantly, it
doesn't crash my computer and force me to restart and lose all my work;
and the problem corrects itself quickly. I just wanted to tell my story
so that maybe someone else has my problem and could try switching to
UXA, or otherwise learn from my experiences.
