OK, I've determined exactly which update actually caused the problem. It
was the one that took it up from 0.15.2 to 0.99.3. By forcing it to use
the 0.15.2-0ubuntu8 version, I regain proper precision (although mouse
speed is significantly lower - probably would require tweaking).

I'll see if I can figure out what actually caused the problem, but I'm
no driver programmer (I'm a mathematician, the language I'm most
proficient in is MatLab).
