For me this began after following the instructions at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582 (for "optimal") as a
remedy for X crashes (bug #355155) in Jaunty.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

This seems to be a known issue with the Intel driver; http://intellinuxgraphics.org/2009Q1.html says:
