[Bug 270728] Re: [X300 M22] X hang on ThinkPad T43 when using 3d (Compiz, UrbanTerror, GL...)

I'm currently running Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on a Dell Inspiron 6000 with
the same ATI driver model as listed in the original comment, and I am
experiencing a related problem - rather than hanging on an attempt to
enable the Extra video effects, X completely restarts.

root@stargazer:/var/log# lshw -C display

After doing some additional research, I also tried:
akili@stargazer:~$ compiz --replace > compiz.txt, and captured the following output:

akili@stargazer:~$ cat compiz.txt
Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Finally, I also caught this section out of xorg.0.log.old, that is
appended immediately after running the compiz --replace command:

On an earlier attempt, I did attempt to install xorg-driver-fglrx with
its related dependencies, and then X would hang before it got to the
login screen with a corrupted video display, even without any visual
effects enabled, so I reverted to the original Radeon package with the
r300_dri.so Xorg module.

Let me know if there's anything else I can provide that might be useful.
This is otherwise a fresh load of Ubuntu as of yesterday, with all the
automatic updates installed that were listed as available as the default
configuration.
