I also noticed that the problem got better with 9.6, but on karmic, i'm now experimenting with it, the sriver still detects the monitor wrong (see the xrandr.out from above). When I'm pressing <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<+>/<-> it switches to 640x480 with the refresh rate 60Hz but the image is in the  upper left corner. I can solve this by switching to the terminal and back to Xorg. I've put a skript in the KDE Autorun which changes my resolution to 1280x1024 with 60Hz. The improvement is that I now can see something. But I can't enter something with the keyboard into KDE Dialogs (like the one from <Alt>-<F2>). Frames still work. For example I can use Kate. I don't know if these problems are caused by the fact that I'm using Karmic, but I will try to test it with Jaunty.
