[Bug 391949] Re: nvidia-glx issues on GeForce 2 go

** Description changed:

- I have been scouring the internet for solution to this problem for a few
- months now and although I have found people with similar problems none
- of the posted solutions have solved the issue. Thanks in advance for any
- help!
+ Using proprietary nvidia drivers for GeForce 2 go on an inspiron 2650
+ gives several problems:

- The Problem:
- ---------------------------------
- Everything works fine when I have the VESA drivers installed. However when I install the Nvidia drivers the problems begin:
- 1.) Computer starts fine. Grub runs fine. Ubuntu splash screen loads fine, and boots.
- 2.) When the display switches from the splash screen, instead of displaying the login screen the display becomes corrupted: half of the screen is orange (login background color), the other half is black. If I then press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace the normal login screen is displayed.
- 3.) Everything then works fine, no display issues. I can change the resolution and use application in fullscreen, no probs.
- 4.) When i try to shut down the system starts to shutdown, however at the point where normally the shutdown splash screen is displayed the screen simply goes blank and the system seems completely unresponsive. There is no HDD activity after this point and the system will sit in this state indefinitely. I'm usually want to throw something large and solid in the general direction on my laptop at this point, but usually opt for manually powering it off.
- 5.) Also if i press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace at any point after having pressed it a login, the screen again simply goes blank and the system seems completely unresponsive.
+ LOGIN: gdm fails to launch initially, showing black/white/single-striped screen at login/desktop (login still works in-blind), if restarted using ctrl+alt+bckspc or /etc/init.d/gdm restart, login works fine.
+ WINDOW TITLES: If compiz is enabled, no window decorations shows up. Works if using metacity.
+ LEAVING DESKTOP: If leaving the graphical environment using ctrl+alt+F2, ctrl+alt+bckspc or simply shutting down the computer screen blanks out and computer is unresponsive, even REISUB fails.

- I have tried using various drivers such as the nvidia legacy drivers,
- but always have the same problem. The same thing happened in Ubuntu
- 6.06. I was hoping feisty would solve the issue but alas! I'm fairly new
- to Ubuntu and still learning lots. Could i be a X server or Gnome
- problem? Are there log files i should be looking at? If so how do i find
- them?
+ Tested drivers:
+ nvidia-glx-96 96.43.10-0ubuntu1
+ nvidia-glx-71 71.86.08-0ubuntu1

- My Laptop:
- ---------------------------------
- Dell Inspiron 2650
- 2Ghz Processor
- 512mb RAM
- Nvidia GeForce2 GO (32mb)
- Dual boot: Windows XP/Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04
