+ using upstream version of intel driver from http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ubuntu/:
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.7.99.901+git20090624.f0270bbb-0ubuntu0sarvatt~jaunty

the problem does not occur anymore.
