Similar issue on my Dell Latitude E6400 every few days. Usually if I
keep tapping the right mouse button (the right mouse button under the
touchpad not the one above) things start working again but the touchpad
then moves the mouse really slowly and when looking under system |
preferences | mouse, the touchpad settings no longer show.

Next time it occurs I'll grab some logs etc.
