i have the same thing with karmic 64 bits and when i try to reconfigure
dkms i got :

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure dkms 
* Running DKMS auto installation service for kernel 2.6.31-1-generic                                        
*  nvidia (185.18.14)...                                                                            [fail]
