The good news is with today's 20090704 update karmic 2.6.31-1 boots and
runs on i830 on this Thinkpad R31.

The bad news it is s-l-o-w.  Using a video intensive benchmark in this
case GtkPerf from Ubuntu Synaptic:

Intrepid runs in 36.0 seconds
karmic_ runs in 65.8 seconds.

Karmic 2.6.31-1 is 83% slower!

In particular the progress bar test runs in

intrepid 1.36 seconds
karmic_ 4.23 seconds

Oof.  What has KMS mode=1 done to us compared to Intel driver module
2.4.1?

Well anyway karmic boots & runs so the problem as written is fixed for
the moment (wait for the next update).

Do note the font smearing problem is still very much with us, with
several characters appearing as black blotches for example U and j and O
and K and ....   Upstream thinks they fixed this see Bugzilla 21415 and
Launchpad #304514.
