I got same problems with old video card.
i got nvidia-96 driver v. 96.43.18 but it didnt worked

i got this new version driver of nvidia-96 driver and it worked
1. "wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/9.43.19/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.19-pkg1.run";
2. "sudo bash NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.19-pkg1.run"
3. removed any other nvidia driver and installed the nvidia-96 driver and it works fine now
