Thanks Bryce for getting back on this one :) 
When the initial boot fails, it does so with a blank screen, although sometimes there is a small purple bar (about 1 cm)  at the very top of the screen, probably from the splash screen. I am unable to Ctrl+Alt+F# to anything to see what processes are running etc.
