Same problem of black screen before login. In ubuntu 10.04 32-bit it
worked to me (I wonder why I switched to 10.10 64 bit)

I have tried all drivers from synaptics and also installed drivers manually from nvidia web.
Now, I'm runnig with nv.

NVIDIA 8600 GT card
