  Binary package hint: xorg

Loaded 10.10 from update/upgrade process (very time consuming), and Live CD. Same symptoms.
I expected to use Ubuntu Desktop after providing a Correct Password.
Instead, after briefly seeing a desktop almost completely appear, the display re-exhibits the login screen.

I expected the Ubuntu Safe Mode to fail similarly.
Instead, It logged in but there were GUI features that were locked (User modification dialogs, delete users).

was able to adduser, but after reboot - sudo password was disabled for added user and About Me window was first noted package that failed to open. Other packages were fine, password using packages failed to open.

- upon 10.10 reload from Live CD -

login loop occured for Ubuntu Desktop option - accepted login/password - opened Desktop - returned to login screen
recovery mode option - accepted login/password - startx - Server already active.
