context of FAIL - A login screen requests Name/Password: ultimately
returns to login screen.
As in - FAIL to start Ubuntu Desktop Edition 10.04 on: same results using LiveCD, CD install, Internet install - with or without simultaneous online updates.
Logs in with "correct" info Safe Mode or Recovery Mode,
Authentication functions to a point, (login fail sound, or; login pass sound) but always returns to login screen.
This behaviour occured with LiveCD as well, but I had no idea what to enter for a login/password combo. It should be noted that since I went into BIOS and set...

, not only can I log in as expected in all modes, but the LiveCD stopped asking for a password.
Why? Don't ask me; I DON'T KNOW! (<<<Ozzy nod.)
I hope I am correct in assuming this an Xserver crash, I thought a crash
referred to irreparable damage.
I attached Xorg.0.log so hopefully it has what you were looking for
somewhere in that.
