To clarify, is this a regression that you noticed only after your latest
update to -intel 2:2.14.0-1ubuntu8 ?

What happens if you downgrade to version -1ubuntu7?  Debs for this version are available in Launchpad here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/2:2.14.0-1ubuntu7/+buildjob/2257409

If that doesn't work, then also try booting an earlier kernel (hold the
shift key during boot to open the menu, then try -rc2 or -rc3.
