That would be fine.  (I typically keep a notepad next to the computer so
I can jot stuff down while system reboots, but whatever is most
convenient for you.)

Actually most of this stuff is in the kernel not X now, so for checking
video memory (as opposed to system memory that free displays), as root
you'd want to keep an eye on the contents of this file:

/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_gem_objects
