Apparently the -intel driver was not distinguishing 946gz as a
965-family chip and so was using 915-family functionality, which could
cause failures during boot and so on. My guess is that this caused the
lockup you saw, although symptoms are fairly different.
Possibly the 2:2.14.0-4ubuntu6 driver will solve your bug. If not, it's
been long enough since the original report and enough fixes and changes
have gone in that we'd need it re-tested and re-reported anyway. So I'm
going to mark this bug a dupe of that one; if you still find it failing
please file a new bug report.
