On closer inspection, I noticed that this bug report touches separate,
most likely independent issues (X with fbdev vs. X with r128 driver).
Hence, I decided to replace this bug report with separate ones to make
it easier to focus on one single issue:

1) r128 does not detect ATI Rage 128 on G3 iMac: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-r128/+bug/400864
2) fbdev wrongly configured in X : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-fbdev/+bug/400875

This bug report is therefore obsolete. I shall try to close it myself -
if that fails, please close it for me.
