Great, thanks.  Also, when did you first start noticing this issue with
the open source driver?  (Or has it always been this way with your
hardware when running this driver?)

Fwiw, I think this may be a known issue with -ati.  (I've burnt out a
card or two due to this or a similar issue myself.)
