The issue started about 4-5 days ago.

I have added the dpkg.log as requested.

When I tested with the classic desktop, I had no effects enabled.

I was also able to do some more tests, it seems that this issue is
related to turning the screen off when there is no activity (via the
energy manager option). As soon as I move the mouse and/or press a
button on the keyboard to reactivate the screen, the desktop freezes.
